Ikat is an ancient resist dyeing process, whereby prior to dyeing, the yarn is meticulously tied with string in pre-determined locations, which subsequently resist the dye. The yarn is untied & retied for each new colour.
Our textiles include both single & double ikat. To create the latter, both weft & warp yarns are resist-dyed - a complex & rare process in which patterns must align during weaving.
In partnership with our master weavers in Hyderabad, we create Japanese kasuri-inspired patterns. Kasuri, meaning "rubbed", refers to the blurred edges of patterns and most frequently consists of small, geometric repeat designs dyed in indigos, whites and browns. We also work with traditional Indian ikat in its myriad forms with partners in Gujarat & Orissa, as well as bold, large-motif Uzbek ikat with partners in Margilan.
Any variations or irregularities are to be celebrated. They are part of the design & inherent to the handcrafted production process, making this item beautifully unique.
